Ok, so it's time to introduce some healthy debate into the mix My view is that Song is a top player without direction on what role he is supposed to play. I actually think he can play as the DM or as a CM, but gets caught between two stalls. In a well organised team, if one midfielder goes forward, another covers, but that understanding does not seem to exist in our team, hence song gets caught out far too often up the field with little cover behind him. It makes it very difficult for Kos and Verm in defence, and is partly the reason I believe they get caught out trying to win the ball in midfield. So the question is, is Song a starter for us, and if so where, AM or DM?

I'd love to know how he is briefed to play. Holding back to protect?, or just charge forward? - I get confused. The guy is physical challenging - can be intimidating but clumsy. At one time I thought he'd get a Red every match - he must have been told to cool it.

Song should be DM first and foremost, he has good vision but his passing can be poor at times and teams were beginning to catch on to his through balls to RVP. He has all the physical attributes to be a great dm and the necessary technical abilities to start an attack all be it from the back of midfield leaving players like Wilshire and Arteta to focus on being more creative

Either wenger doesnt agree or Song is not listening. We may find that when Wilshere returns he plays more of a holding role, or should i say completely a holding role - AS HE SHOULD!

If we get Wilshere back - even at 90% - it'll be like signing a new player ...<laugh> ... doh !

I think Song should start on the bench. I don't think he is good enough to start in a top 4 team. His attacking play is not good enough to be a AM and his defensive positioning is quite poor. He has a lot of heart but he generally loses the ball too easily and is caught is possession too often. I would bet he gives away more fouls than anyone in the team, and he hasn't the acumen to do it in sensible places. I think he is the cause of too many problems
I think we need to buy a DM and an AM and have Wilshere play box to box when fit. Arteta, Rosicky, Ramsey and Song should be squad/rotation players. With RvP (?) Pod and Giroud, up front with Oxo, Walcott, Gerv, Miyaichi and Campbell on the bench we would have a pretty serious squad if we discount our defence.

Jayram, I fail to see how you think Song is a top player, honestly. In what area of the game does he excel to be classed as a top player ? He isn't quick, isn't great positionally, doesn't have great passing (the odd pass to RVP are proven to be exceptions rather than the norm - when he can't make simple passes to team mates), has a rubbish shot, doesn't score goals, isn't much of a dribbler ....
I fail to see what he is actually good at. The only thing he has which is of benefit to Arsenal is his size, thats about it !!

LOL.
He is the most defensive of the midfielders we have though and his size/power is very necessary, but lets not pretend he is a guaranteed starter for footballing reasons ...

I think Song, contrary to the press reporting, had his worst season last year. A couple of years ago he really came through and played well, and last year I thought he was on eof our better players. There's no doubt he is struggling, but i do think that is partly because of the lackof defensive organisation in the team. I would like to see him in a defensive disciplined role - i actually do think he can tackle (13th in the league last year in tackles - though i do realise stats dont tell the whole story - but when you consider the opposition had the ball less against us than any other team its not bad). You are right about his tendency to give away free kicks - one of the worst in the league Still I think there is something there - i just want to see him have a defined role. At the moment he seems to get the same freedom as Messi!

I hadn't been taking the Song transfer rumours all that seriously but today i learn that a replacement has been lined up from Celtic and i am now wondering is there no player our esteemed Board will not sell.
I have no real axe to grind over Song, i think he is OK but it seems to me that if Barca come calling we will sell anyone.
History of the PL tells us that stability is the key to success but that no longer seems to hold any sway with Kroenke and Gazidis.
They are selling the club and the fans down the river in my opinion.

If we get one of the players from Celtic as a replacement from Song I will be fuming because although Song isn’t amazing he is worlds above those players mentioned from Celtic. I'm struggling to see why we bought Podolski, Giroud and Carzola now because those seemed like very good buys but now it seems their talent will be wasted this season. I think the picture below represents a fitting interpretation of what we've become:
